BOOK EARLY!! The conference is over Memorial Day Weekend. Although
travel
is expected to be relatively light on Thursday (before the conference)
and
Tuesday (after the conference), you should try to book your flights as
soon
as possible. Participants are strongly urged to fly in Thursday. We are
planning a very nice welcome reception, from 5-10, on Thursday at the
University
Center (you will not need to get dinner). The first plenary session on
Friday morning will feature neutrino physics.
There are three airports within 60 miles of Williamsburg.
Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF) is 20 miles away.
Richmond (RIC) is 40 miles away.
Norfolk (ORF) is 50 miles away.
Participants are urged to fly into either Newport News or Richmond,
if possible. The trip from Norfolk airport goes through a bridge/tunnel
over/under the
5-mile wide James River, and often has very heavy traffic. In some
cases, flying to Norfolk might be cheaper (Southwest flies there), but
note below that we are providing free transportation from the other
airports (and limousines are about $80 round trip). Although Newport
News is
closer, there are many more flights to Richmond.
The DPF2002 travel agent is Uniglobe U-Travel.
Participants can obtain significant airfare
discounts through them (call Kendall or Nancy at 1 800 280 8887 and
mention the name of the conference) or from Delta Airlines directly
(for Richmond--mention
the meeting ID code: 181783A) or from U.S. Airways directly (for
Newport News or Richmond--
mention the meeting ID code: 1512172). The discounts are 10% if booked
60 or more days in advance; 5% if booked 30-60 days in advance. There
is also an AVIS
rental car discount number J990839
TRANSPORTATION FROM RICHMOND AND NEWPORT NEWS AIRPORTS TO CAMPUS WILL BE
PROVIDED FREE TO PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES between 11 A.M. and 11 P.M.
on the Thursday before the conference and between noon and 4 P.M. on the
Tuesday after the conference. William and Mary buses will be making round
trips to and from the airport---there should be one leaving every 60 minutes
or less. Look for the student in the baggage claim area with a big DPF2002
sign, and he/she will direct you to the buses (and tell you when the next is
leaving). At other times, there are limousine services that will take you
to Williamsburg for roughly $30 per person. If you rent a car, you can
follow these directions from Richmond, these from Newport
News, or these from Norfolk, to the University Center on the campus.
There is a Greyhound/AmTrak station in Williamsburg, within 10 minutes
walking distance of the campus and most hotels. AmTrak has 4-5 trains per day,
generally from Washington. The trains are slow, but inexpensive...
Williamsburg is on a peninsula. Most people driving from the north or south
will go through Richmond. They will then get onto I-64 eastbound towards
Williamsburg. Just follow these directions after that.
Click here for a map of the Williamsburg area. By March, we will
have a detailed map showing all of the hotels, campus sites, train/bus
stations, etc. posted here. A 1 MB map of campus is
here in pdf
format. |
