Take Glucophage (Metformin) exactly as prescribed. Do not take less or more amounts than necessary or for periods of time that is not prescribed.

Follow the instructions on the label. Doses may be adjusted regarding on the needs and on the blood sugar level.

Take Glucophage (Metformin) with a meal unless contraindicated. Use this medication regularly to regulate blood sugar level, but diet and exercise are more important factors in a diabetic regimen.

An extended-release type of medication must not be crushed or chewed, swallow it whole. Store medication away from direct sunlight

Vitamin B12 may be prescribed, but take only the allowable dosage. Blood sugar level often changes; increases during stress, infection, trauma, or surgery and decreases when exercising more than the usual, skipping meals, or with alcohol consumption.

Missed dose:
Take it as soon as remembered along with food, but skip if the time for the next dose is near. Afterwards, proceed to the regular schedule. Do not double dose.

Important:

• Avoid drinking alcohol as it lowers blood sugar and increases risk of lactic acidosis during Glucophage therapy.


• Do not take Glucophage if allergic to it or in a diabetic ketoacidosis.


• Temporarily stop taking Glucophage if any procedure requiring contrast medium will be done.


• Prior to taking in the medication, inform health care provider regarding any kind of medical condition due to tendencies of acquiring lactic acidosis.


• Get emergency help if experiencing muscle pain, weakness, numb feeling in arms or legs, stomach pain, breathing troubles, nausea and vomiting, arrhythmia, dizziness, or fatigue.


• This medication is expected not to be harmful in an unborn baby. Inform health practitioner if pregnant or plans pregnancy during course of treatment. No known information is present regarding passing of Glucophage to breast milk.


• Do not give to children younger than 10 years old and extended release tablets should not be given to children less than 17 years old.

Contact health care provider and seek emergency medical care:

• Severe allergic reactions


• Dizziness


• Tachypnea or difficulty in breathing

• Persistent sore throat


• Unusual drowsiness


• General ill-feeling


• Muscle pain or weakness


• arrhythmias
