This medication is usually taken four times a day every 6 hours or three times a day every 8 hours depending on the dosage. It is taken for 7-21 days.

Erythromycin can be in a tablet, capsule, long-acting capsule or tablet, chewable tablet, liquid preparation, or pediatric dose.

Take it as ordered, and read the label carefully. Do not take more or less of this medication than what was prescribed.

Liquid preparation and liquid drops must be shaken to mix it evenly. A bottle dropper is used for measurement of pediatric drops.

Chewable tablets must be chewed or crushed prior to swallowing. Capsules and other tablets must be taken in with a glass of water.

Do not stop taking the medication even if feeling better, take it on a full course.

Take Erythromycin an hour before or 2 hours after eating. This medication cannot be taken with fruit juices or carbonated drinks.

If a dose is missed, take it as remembered, but if the next dose is already near, skip it then continue to the regular dose. Do not double dose.

Store this medication in its container and tightly close it. Keep it out of children and store in a room temperature away from moisture and heat. Dispose properly if outdated.

Prior to Erythromycin therapy:

• Inform health care provider if allergic to medication and its components.


• Inform health care provider regarding prescription and non prescription medication as well as other vitamins and dietary supplements.


• Inform health care provider if there is history of liver disease, jaundice, stomach problems or colitis.


• Inform health care provider if pregnancy is present, or is breast-feeding or if became pregnant during therapy.


• If a surgery is planned, including dental work-ups, inform about Erythromycin therapy.

Some side effects may be felt, inform health care provider if these persist:

• Upset stomach


• Diarrhea


• Vomiting


• Stomach cramps


• Mild rash


• Stomach pain

Seek medical advise immediately if experiencing any of these:

• Severe rash


• Itching


• Hives


• Difficulty breathing or swallowing


• Jaundice


• Pale colored school


• Wheezing


• Dark urine


• Vaginal irritation


• Unusual fatigue
