Clomid and its uses
Clomid is the trade name of Clomiphene citrate and is one of the most commonly used fertility medications.
It is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), which works by inhibiting the negative feedback on the hypothalamus and increasing the production of gonadotropins.
Its mechanism of action makes it ideal for treating female infertility and the medication is prescribed in cases, where the infertility is caused by ovulating problems such as anovulation and oligoovulation.
In addition, Clomid is prescribed as a part of in vitro fertilization procedures as well. The medication is sold under various brand names such as Clomid, Serophene, and Milophene, while the generics are typically sold as generic Clomid or Clomiphene citrate.
Each tablet has 50mg Clomiphene citrate and the tablets are taken for five days (unless prescribed otherwise), starting three to five days into the patient's monthly menstrual cycle.
Most female patients would have to repeat the treatment for three to six times and if the medication does not work after the sixth cycle, then the physician might recommend alternative treatment options.
Clomid has 70% success rate as far as ovulation and from all women, who start ovulating, up to 50% will conceive.
The success of the treatment depends greatly on the timing of the sexual activity and patients are encouraged to use body temperature graphs or other simple tests in order to determine if they are ovulating and time their sexual activities accordingly.
Safety Information/ Warning Precautions

Before taking the medication, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any of the medication's ingredients, if you have health problems, and in addition, let your doctor know about all other medications that you are using.
Keep the medication in its original container, away from the reach of children, and dispose of the expired tablets in a safe manner.
Side Effects
The most common side effect, caused by Clomid are hot flashes, visual blurring, abdominal discomfort, and reversible ovarian enlargement and cyst formation.
Less common adverse reactions include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and reversible alopecia, but they are experienced by less than 0.1% of the treated women.
Weight gain is possible too and some women have reported vivid dreams while on Clomid. Since the medication is a powerful ovarian stimulator, it increases the chance of multiple ovulation and conceiving twins.
On average, 7%-10% of the women, who have conceived after Clomid treatment, had twins, compared to 1% of all women, who had conceived without taking any medication.
If you experience any serious adverse reactions, while taking the drug, call your doctor immediately and visit the nearest emergency room at once.
