Amoxil (Amoxicillin) is a beta-lactam antibiotic, which is used to treat streptococcal pharyngitis, acute otitis media, pneumonia, skin infections, salmonella, urinary tract infections, lyme disease, chlamydia, and other bacterial infections.

It is also used in treatments of cystic acne and prevention and treatment of anthrax; Amoxil (Amoxicillin) is used as a prevention of bacterial endocarditis in people, considered at high risk, who are having dental surgery or other dental work done.

How to take:
Amoxil is prescribed in different dosages, depending on the type and the severity of the infection. In most cases, the oral tablets have to be taken every 8 hours or every 12 hours for the duration of the treatment and the dose could vary from 250mg and 500mg to 875mg.

In treatments of gonorrhea, once-off, 3g dose might be prescribed. The capsules should be swallowed whole, without chewing them, with a full glass of water or milk. Amoxil could be taken with or without food.

You should take the medication exactly as your doctor has prescribed and for as long as directed! In pediatric patients, the dosage is determined by taking into account the child’s age, weight, and the type and severity of the infection.

Drug class and mechanism of action - Amoxil is a ?-lactam antibiotic, which prevents the bacteria from synthesizing cell walls. Since the medication could be degraded by ?-lactamase-producing bacteria, it is commonly combined with clavulanic acid for higher effectiveness.

Missed dose:
if you miss a dose, you should take one as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose.

Do not take two or more doses at the same time! If you forget to give a dose to your child, you should give it if you remember up to one hour later, otherwise you should wait for the next dose.

Storage:
The Amoxil capsules should be stored at or below 20 degrees C (68 degrees F), while the oral tablets and the dry powder can be stored at or below 25 degrees C (77 degrees F).

Keep the medication away from the reach of children and dispose of the expired tablets and capsules as directed by your pharmacist.

Safety Information/ Warning Precautions

Do not use Amoxil if you are allergic to Amoxicillin or any of the inactive ingredients.

If you have received live oral typhoid vaccine recently or if you have infectious mononucleosis, tell your doctor and let him decide if it is safe for you to use the medication.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding and tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications, herbal remedies, and dietary supplements.

Amoxil (Amoxicillin) Side Effects

The most common side effects include rashes, nausea, vomiting, and antibiotic-associated colitis.

In extremely rare cases mental changes, sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sounds, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia might be experienced as well.
